What makes me stand out as an educator is my ability to connect with my students and make them feel comfortable and truly cared for. I feel fulfilled when my students begin to show more confidence in themselves as it relates to their academics. I work very hard to provide them with what they need to move forward in their learning.
I bring to my work, 25 years of experience as a Special Education/Learning Support Teacher, Head of Inclusion and Learning Support Coordinator in the United States public school system as well as in private international schools in Spain, Qatar, Hong Kong and Singapore. Working in international schools as a learning support teacher and coordinator has allowed me to help students and families from various cultural and ethnic backgrounds. It is enriching both personally and professionally to work with people from all over the world. I have spent my entire career helping students gain confidence, improve their academics and reach their goals. Furthermore, I have guided several schools forward with their inclusive practices so more students can feel recognized and supported.
I am highly trained and experienced in specialized instructional techniques in all areas of literacy; phonics, fluency, comprehension & written language. I am also skilled in supporting students who have difficulty staying organized, managing their time, and getting their work completed and handed in on time. I can provide skill training and coaching with organizing assignments and projects, time management, and planning. I use data-based systems in order to understand current levels of performance, set goals to work toward, and monitor progress toward those goals. I am experienced working with students from Kindergarten through 12th grade.

“My son transferred into the Canadian International School from a local Hong Kong School at the beginning of 7th grade. His English language skills were lower than expectations and he needed a boost to catch up. He worked with Miss Haagensen twice a week on reading vocabulary and comprehension. He made great progress and now in 8th grade, he does not require further extra support.”
